The Hindu religion venerates four ancient scriptures above all others. These texts are the four Vedas. For millennia, each generation of Brahmin priests passed the Vedas to the next generation in an oral tradition. This practice of faithful repetition continued long after its language, known as Vedic, had fallen into disuse. Remarkably, no Veda was ever written down before the 1800s.

The oldest of the Vedas is the Rig Veda, believed to be at least 4,000 years old, making it the oldest scripture still in daily use. It is a collection of "hymns" chanted by Brahmin priests during a fire ritual. Much of this litany is in praise of soma which, depending on context, may be a sacred psychoactive potion, the plant from which it is made, or a divine being. As the potion which renders the gods immortal, soma is analogous to the nectar of Greek mythology. Also, being a liquid that was poured out in a sacrificial act, it is analogous to the wine libations of the ancient Romans.

During the fire ritual the soma plant was ground up with water, strained through sheep's wool, diluted with milk and drunk, but neither the Rig Veda, its commentaries nor any other Hindu scripture identifies the plant in plain language. What was this soma plant?

Janiger's data shows LSD constants and provoked both spiritual and creative energies among participants. Dr. de Rios contrasts the major themes found by this original research with data from her cross-cultural studies to see similarities and differences among cultures and peoples who accessed LSD-like altered states of consciousness for spiritual and healing purposes.

LSD in Los Angeles, l954-l962

Cliff Anderson, Poetry reading

A recital by one of the visionary poets, Cliff Anderson.

Cliff Anderson, Poetry recital

"Plant Goddesses and Shaman Women from Myth and Antiquity to Now"

Cynthia Palmer and Michael Horowitz present an overview of the history of Women with a knowledge of psychoactive and healing plants. They claimed that alchemy's most closely guarded secrets were openly displayed in these drawings and paintings, yet the riddles posed by the pictures have remained unsolved for hundreds of years - until now. Clark Heinrich has discovered the key that unlocks these "open secrets," and will reveal all in this colorful and unusual presentation.
